Slow cooked apple crisp

Crock pot apple crisp
The other day I purchased a five pound bag of apples from Safeway and they were awful. I peeled two for the kids, and they were completely bruised. There were two apples in the center of the bag that were beginning to rot.

Being the person that I am, I can not waist food. When I hear people complain and say things like "I'd rather starve than to eat...," it's obvious they have never gone hungry before.

Anyhow, I just can't waste food. Instead of tossing the bag I made slow cooked apple crisp. Besides peeling and slicing the apples; it's super easy.

These ingredients are based on using a 5 lb. bag of apples. This recipe also contains nuts.

Sliced Apple preparation

Crisp ingredients

  • 5 lb. Apples
  • 1 cup water
  • Cinnamon to taste
  • Nutmeg to taste
  • 1/4 Raw or brown sugar (I used raw)

Pour 1/2 a cup of water in the crock pot. Layer 1/3 of the sliced apples in the slow cooker. Sprinkle lightly with sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Repeat the process until all of the apples are in the crock pot. Cook over night on low, or cook it in the morning.

Crisp Preparation

  • 1/2 cup Flour
  • 1 cup Raw or brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 Oatmeal
  • 4 ounces Raisins or dried cherries
  • 3 oz chopped or sliced almonds
  • 1/2 cup of Butter

After the apples are nearly finished or finished cooking make the crisp. Combine all of the crisp ingredients. Mix well and  add it to the slow cooked apples. Leave enough to  a layer the top with some.  Let the apple crisp cook on low for another hour and serve.
